This summer, world-traveling artist Thom Ricks invites painters of all levels to join him for an immersive on-location sketching and painting workshop at La Roane Retreat Center in Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, France, from June 4–11.
Nestled in the French countryside, this workshop offers more than just painting—it’s a sensory experience. Guests will enjoy three chef-prepared meals daily, three guided excursions to nearby villages (Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, Cordes-sur-Ciel, and Caylus, weather permitting), and a blend of structured and free time for sketching, swimming, yoga, or even a restorative massage. The artistic journey includes three demos, group painting sessions, and one-on-one instruction with Ricks himself.
Suggested for beginners is two half-day workshops at Thom’s San Marcos studio, held in April and May, ensuring travelers feel confident capturing the essence of a place—something Ricks has mastered.
A Texas Hill Country resident, Ricks has traveled the world with a sketchbook in hand, distilling architecture, movement, and color into vivid, expressive works. His paintings don’t just depict places—they interpret them, layering structure and tone the way a composer arranges a melody. Guided by a deep curiosity about the world, he seeks to translate the energy and rhythm of a scene onto the canvas. A published author and illustrator of ten books, his most recent project, The Art of the River Walk, celebrates the charm of San Antonio’s iconic waterfront.
“It’s an amazing time with lovely folks at a beautiful place, with delicious food included too. I’m really looking forward to going back.” – Susan Damon
For artists seeking inspiration, guidance, and an unforgettable creative retreat, this workshop is the perfect brushstroke on your summer canvas.
